Self Reflection: At the beginning of the week where we were told to make the statement of intent, we didn't have any ideas on what to do for our movie. I believe with this statement of intent it helps us a lot, where we first think who our target audience would be. Which then this gives us more idea in order to get their attention, leads to every one of us in the group to add their own ideas. I think that without this statement of intent the group would not have a starting point of the idea.
My group and I have decided to create a film opening in the genre of thriller. Here is my research into the codes and conventions that are used used in the openings of texts from this genre.
Typical conventions from the thriller genre:
Films from this genre usually include dark mood from the film by having dark lighting in parts of the scene, other than that the characters that they have in the movie would use make up that tend to look natural but sometimes they uses color tones that are much pale in which this shows the character to be mysterious making audience to get hook on the movie. The places that are shown int eh movie are also places that audience can feel its normal for example a busy city, the costumes that the characters would use are normal casual outfit so that the antagonist in the film can blend in making audience to not know what to expect. The sound that usually can be heard in a thriller movie is that they usually have screams, intense breathing and even tension music in parts of the movie, this gives a more in depth feeling that audience can understand and decipher what the movie is trying to show to them. Not only does it represent the thriller genre from the mise-en-scene and sounds but they usually uses camera techniques that are mostly hand held, with this camera techniques it gives the feeling to the audience to feel like they are in the moment with the character as it feels more personal. With hand held it may seem like it is very uneasy as there are a lot of things going on but this makes tension and make it very confusing but makes the curious about it. Other than just the camera techniques that they use are hand held but in most thriller movies they have flashback scene, this gives the audience to understand the background of the movie before it starts giving audience a sense of what to expect. The type of editing that can mostly be seen in thriller are the quick cuts where it can be sudden cuts to different scene, this gives a
The narrative is normally about the character that may be in trouble; which they might be missing, in danger or many more. They usually show whats happening as an introduction to the movie from the film opening, in my opinion film opening in genre like this are very important as it builds suspense in the very beginning that hooks the audience to feel curious of whats going to happen in the movie.
Here are some texts that I will break out even more and see how they appeal to audiences and how they can inspire me.
Big Research - In blue Small research - In Purple
Missing, 2018.
Produce by: Sony Pictures, Screen Gems, Bazelevs Company, Stage 6 Films, Search Party
Distributed by: Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, Sony Pictures Releasing
The movie missing is group to the Mystery and Thriller genre, which was made in 2018. This movie gives off the mood of it being in the year 2000s where most of the color lighting is gloomy but there were some colours that stands out. But what I like about this movie is that they use a combination in their movie for example the glitching edit in the movie as well as normal camera quality to which this gives a confusing feeling effect to audience that I enjoy watching. This movie is one of the main ideas that I wanted to do for my project.
In this movie called missing they added many conventions that conform such as the lowkey lighting where it is dark and gloomy that makes the mood of the movie to feel mysterious. They also added a flashback in the movie which this conforms the genre as flashbacks give the audience to be more curious as it builds tension before the movie start and it hooks audience that makes them try to figure out what is happening or going to happen next.
Not only they added conventions that conforms but they also added some different things that I didn't expect such as the camera. Throughout the movie they do use hand held as one of their camera technique but they also use a different type where mostly it was on the characters perspective but laptop camera. This gives a much personal feeling for the audience and with this camera quality / idea of using the laptop camera is new which makes them subvert the thriller convention.
The characters that they are trying to represent in the movie is a teenager where she was shown using outfits that are what teenagers would use but they added a twist as they made the characters use outfits that are not really casual and more messy, this can tell the audience that the character is not organize which this gives more tension with the movie plot her mother went missing, with the messy outfits this can tell audience how the character was stressed out with everything. Other than that they also have characters who wore formal outfits such as the FBI agent where they use a suit, as well as her friend and her mothers friend who took care of her wore outfits that are formal and much neater. From this outfits / costume that characters are using explains in detail how each characters feel and the authority they have; for example the FBI agent who wore a suit means that they have the authority being involved with the law which tells that he has a higher power than the teenage girl, for her mothers friend and her friend who is in the movie their outfit are neat which tells the audience that they are not impacted that much with the current situation and they were there trying to help the main character which is the teenage girl to go through and solve the problem that was happening.
The camera angled that they mostly use is the close up because with their movie idea is being based by the recording from the characters laptop. This gives a much personal feeling, to which the audience will feel much more engage and they could understand more about the movie. Other than that the sounds that they use conform a lot with the genre and idea that they are doing for this move. Even tho they use camera angles that are mostly close up, this gives an advantage for them to which this creates suspense for audience to be able to feel more about the characters feeling as it is being shown a lot.
Breaking In, 2018.
Produce by: Will Packer Productions, Breaking In Pictures, and Dentsu
Distribute by: Universal Pictures
This movie Breaking In is group in the genre of Thriller that was made in 2018. At first this movie gives off just a normal typical vibe of an American family life, to which they have a twist by showing the sudden change in environment where everything started to be all isolated and the addition of the sound that they added to emphasize the feeling in the movie. I choose this movie as one of the big research is that in our opening I would like have most of the conventions they use in the movie, which includes this movie is also the same genre as the opening that i'm going to do.
Usually in a thriller genre they would have a hook in the opening of the movie, which then it will cut into the actual flow of the movie. Sometimes it can be a flashback or even a short snip of the future that might happen soon in the movie. This give tension and allows the audience to understand what might happen or why some parts in the movie happen.
The genre convention that they conform in this movie is the lighting, as they are creating suspense in the movie at first the scenery was like a normal neighborhood with a character having a normal jog but as it progresses the light become dull and dimmer with addition the setting was in the middle of the forest, to which this allows the audience to feel more intense with the surrounding being like that. They added red lighting to which this happens when in the scene all of the lights turn off indicating a black out, but then the red light fills the whole room. This red lighting represent danger is about to happen, where as the music that they choose fit with the environment which mostly just the loud footsteps, heavy breathing and many more.
But to make this movie different and interesting is with their subvert convention, the conventions that they subvert is by showing characters with darker skin as their main character. Usually american movies would show characters who have a lighter skin colour, but with this darker skin colour this allows the movie to have a different approach to the audience making audiences who are dark skin to feel more included in the movie. Another part is that during a scene where they are trying to show the main character which is the mom feel isolated, a sudden song come out which doesn't conform the whole situation that is happening which this is called contrapuntal. This allows the audience to feel confuse with the sudden sound, to which at the end they show that it wasn't something dangerous but more or less was just the youngest child finding something out.
They show the character like the mother who was going through events by having her wear clothes that were simple but it looks messy, another thing is how they represent the youngest child in the movie which he look very mature and he knows it all by the outfit that he uses which was very tidy and the colours weren't as bright as a normal child would use. They show the antagonist character by the untidy and ripped clothes, the characters also was filled with tattoos to which usually people with tattoos in movie indicates they are up to no good.
Some technical elements that were being shown is the camera angle, when they were flying the drone they zoom into the drone trying to make the audience focus on the drone. Other than focusing on the drone this allows the audience to have a guess on whats coming which in other words this creates curiosity for the audience. They also uses a low angle when the main character the mother was smashing lights, this shows how the main character has more power during that scene which makes the audience to feel like the main character is about to do something heroic to save her children.
Fractured, 2019
In this movie fractured they are targeting audience who enjoys watching thriller and mystery, because this movie is all about the plot twist that happen throughout the movie. The age range that they are targeting are somewhere young adult to adult which this would be 18-30s. This wouldn't be good to show to younger audience below 18 because of the psychological elements that are shown are better to be seen by mature audiences.
I like the part when the character in the beginning had a twist to which the little girl at first was just doing her thing and then suddenly a sudden animal pop out that change the event of the scene, to which it leads to her death. I also like the environment of the scene where most of the colours are dull and that's what I want to implement in my opening as these colour represent darkness and gloomy feeling which this matches the idea of what I'm trying to do. I love the camera angles that they use in this movie, like the sudden close up, the high angle when the daughter falls to which I want to add them in my opening because this emphasizes whats happening in the dream.
In my opinion, throughout the movie I have nothing that I would not want to be shown in the movie as this movie is what the general idea of the opening that we are trying to do.
IT, 2017
In the movie IT they are targeting audience in the range of 18-30s, they are targeting those audience because in this movie it contains many violence to which this will not be suitable for the children / younger audiences. Other than that IT targets audience who enjoy watching horror, as this move contains many violence such as; the death of the character that was shown in the opening of the movie, how the main character (the clown) started chasing and attacking the other characters. This type of content conforms the genre thriller to which this also attract new audience to be curious in what kind of horror movie would have a clown as their 'scarer'.
From the movie IT what I love the most is how they do the edit in the movie, they use quick cuts in order to move from scene to scene which this also creates suspense making the situation in the movie feels high pace and intense. Not only that, I love how the environment that was shown during the opening suits the feeling that the movie is trying to give to the audience to feel like they are in the movie as well with the dark lighting and colour scheme. Other than that I like how they chose the perfect sound effects that emphasizes the feeling that each scene is trying to show, other than that with the sound effects such as the running footsteps, the rain falling down, this gives an intense feeling as the suspense grow as it progress because the sound starts to get louder.
Overall from the movie IT this doesnt match any plot or ideas from the movie that I want to put in my project because overall I dont enjoy watching horror. Specifically with how the sounds becomes louder, as if the audience have not gotten the idea of the movie trying to build suspense. Other than that, from overall the characters in the movie which in my opinion some of the characters acting doesn't feel natural, to which I would not want that to be shown in my project but instead having better actors to allow to give a more natural and realistic feeling. The choice of music that they use in the movie is not enjoyable for me and not the type of music I would want to put in my project.
Get Out, 2017
The movie Get Out targets audience who are young adults to adult which would be about 18 - 30 year olds. They target audience at this age is because at the beginning of the movie they showed scenes that are mature to which this movie has a R-rating making it to not a suitable movie for children. Other than just audience based on their age but they are also targeting people who are thriller enthusiast, because throughout this whole movie it was filled with tension that is being build up that creates suspense for the audience by having sudden pop up of random characters being all stiff or acts unnatural.
From this movie what I like is when they added random pop up of characters that act in an unnatural way to which this creates curiosity and tension for the audience, by having this in my opening movie project this allows to create a more suspense making the audience think there will be a twist in which this allows the audience to feel engage with the movie by them making suspicion on whats going to happen next and who actually are the characters and why they acted that way. I like how the environment subvert the location of the scene, to which this allows complexity of the scene where then audience expectations aren't always whats going to come out next. The choice of camera angle that they use, such as the zoom out, over the shoulder shot and a tracking camera movement fit this whole vibe of the movie to which I would want to these camera angles and movement in my project because these camera angles creates suspense and emphasize things such as the character expression, focusing on certain parts of the scene and many more.
Ofcourse from this movie I would not want to add the mature contents because it doesn't match with the idea of my project. Other than that what I dislike is the confusing story plot, as the movie plays it was confusing for me how the story line in my opinion didn't match. Maybe this was what they were trying to do in the movie which making the story line confusing to which this gets the audience to be hook, but I would try to avoid and not add it in the opening.
Fun Notes from the movie: Main character black man, uses close up to emphasize the characters expression after they hit a deer to which this gives the audience to feel curious thinking that he might have a feeling something would happen.
There was also another black man to which this character was the gardener / person cleaning up the yard which he look confuse and his subtle movements makes it more suspicious to the audience. They also show how the house where the character went in from, it zooms out to show that this was film behind the shoulder of this gardener to which this creates suspense thinking this character is about to do something.
What subvert from this movie is that, in a scene which is the mansion house of the girl it was very modern and classy, but the surrounding environment was in the middle of a forest while the trees were covering all around the house.
When they were in the dinner table, what we can see is the candles being the only source of light that gives a warm lightning makes it gives an interesting effect for the movie but also this gives a very uncomfortable sense to which this makes the audience to think something might happen.
when the main character was walking down to go out of the house, this maid character has been popping out suddenly. Not only it was during those events of him being outside the house, but it was also when the mother was going inside the kitchen ti which the maid was just standing there all stiff with the carrot cake. the character when he was asked about his mom death the character movement looks like it was controlled to which this allows the audience to guess out that the mother has a higher power than him and the mother is a bad person for making him paralyze (to which she said just like how he did nothing about his mothers passing), which soon after the character went to a different realm called the sunken place to which he had no control over his body.
noncontinuous error : when the character were suddenly popping in to the scene without doing anything that seems like it wasn't suppose to be there (did on purpose to make audience feel more confuse and more curious about whats gonna happen)
camera angles: close up, over the shoulders, long shot, hand held, extreme close up (the eye and the dear), low angle, high angle. match cut
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder; Episode 1, 2024
The series A Good Girl's Guide to Murder that I specifically choose is the first episode. This series is based from a book with the genre mystery and thriller as well, which then become a series where roughly each episode is about 43 minutes. The series uses teenage characters in the movie as their main character, to which this tells me that their target audience are young adults, with estimation of their age would be around 14-18. This series uses the theme of high school student to which this makes it appealing to their target audience, because they show characters experiencing coming of age and as well teenage relationship where this gives a personal sense to the audience. Not only does it target young adult audience but they also target audience who are interested in crime and detective fiction, from the title that they use with the word 'murder' this gives audience to feel hook just from it by giving curiosity what story plot will this series show.
From this series what i like to use in my opening movie project is the part when they open the episode with one of their character to suddenly come out from a black screen then walking in a dark big road. In my opinion by doing this i can hook audience to guess what is going to happen next to which this also allows audience to keep on watching the movie opening figuring out whats going to happen. Other than this part of the episode, I also want to add the sound to be just footsteps like the one that they use in that scene. Not only just footsteps but the sudden whirring noise that pops out of nowhere, with addition to the breathing noise of the character. The character uses the colour blue while the scenery was gloomy dark, but what matches the scenery is that they use colours that are not the typical "dark" aesthetic like grey, black and etc, but the colour of blue and other colours that would usually be shown as bright are dull to which the light blue colour of the shirt that character is using has faded. This type of colour that they choose for this episode emphasize the curiosity of the audience and as I am the audience i feel curious on whats going to happen.
The movie opening that im trying to do for my opening movie project is dark aesthetic, with the gloomy feeling and the dull lighting. For this episode they did exactly the idea that i was looking for, but what I dont want to do from this episode opening is that there was nothing happening other than the character walking which was shoot in a long shot angle to which then it cuts to the character which I believe it was a tracking shot as they showed the character from the inside and the camera was following the character. But mostly in that scene it was just the character moving with dramatic sound effects, in my opinion this is bothering so I would like to just show just the characters walking for a whole 2 minutes.
Jurassic World: Chaos Theory; Episode 3, 2024
The series Jurassic World: Chaos Theory targets a large range of audience, from the age of 8 until 25. It targets the audience in the age 8 by making this series being produce in a cartoon animation way which this also targets younger children who are a fan of dinosaurs. Just because it is produce as a cartoon animation this also targets older audience such as young adults, because the older jurassic movie was in 1993 to which the audience who watched this are able to be exposed to which this gives them more likeliness to watch another jurassic theme movie or even series. I choose this series because it is also apart grouped in the genre of thriller that matches the idea of my opening movie project, with addition of the action and adventure horror genre which this series gave me ideas that I wanted to put in my project. Even though this series is cartoon animation, I like the opening of this episode to which this gives me an idea.
From this episode of the series, what I like about the opening is that they started off with the street light being shown with the camera being in a low angle, which this tells me that it is trying to represent that we are being in the characters perspective that was laying down underneath the light. Soon the light gets brighter then it cuts to the character's close up which was recorded from a high angle as it shows the character laying down on the sofa. Which then suddenly with a twist the camera shows that the character lost an arm that the close up shot shows the characters expression that also gives the audience confusion with what happen to the characters arm. Not only that, the surrounding environment of the scene were decorated to give a cabin feeling, with warm lighting that lights up the room, the furniture colours are dark colours or colours with low saturation while the only colour that pops out the most is the characters hair being bright neon colours. The low saturation colour is trying to give a cozy feeling, to which I would like to use this in my opening because it would be better to have all the colour vibe in my opening to match with the surrounding. Other than just the colours the choice of furniture they add in the scene creates an even deeper feeling, with the furniture that seems old but still usable which this shows that the place is empty that gives a feeling of isolation for the character. The feeling of mystery is also represented with the emptiness of the scene, which they had a POV shot from the character looking around the cabin to which it was empty until there was a sudden sound that cuts into the character meeting a new person. This kind of sudden twist that I want to add to my project.
From this episode, what I would not put in my opening is how the characters hair colour is bright neon colours, in my opinion they made the characters colour bright neon with the situations that the character is in is trying to give the audience a sense of background from the character. As the colours mix match this shows how the character might be experiencing a lot of things that might mean the problems has not been solved at all. Other than that I would like to add some other music that could emphasize the scene and not only just the footsteps and sudden loud noises.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage, 2018
The movie Venom: Let There Be Carnage is a movie that is group in the thriller, action and horror genre. It is considered as thriller because of the suspenseful music and action that was shown in the movie. Not only that but the tension between the main character with the venom, in the movie they also show violence to which this shows that they are targeting audience who are teenagers to adult with the age range of 15-30s. As Venom is a superhero film, this also allows them to reach audience who enjoy watching superhero film.
What I would like to use from this movie is that at the very start of the movie they use an establishing shot to tell the audience where the next scene will happen which this in my opinion gives more curiosity for the audience. With addition of the colour lighting is also dark but cold as the sky is a dark blueish colour in which this matches the whole theme of the movie. But what makes it stand out is how they emphasize the place which looks like an abandon old 1900s mansion to which in the window there is warm lighting that comes out which was a dark orange ish but it wasn't bright but more to dull. Other than that the environment was empty with the trees having no leaves and just branches. The sound on the other hand matches the vibe, with the whistling that is trying to indicate the sound of wind going around, the chirping of insects and even the background noise of the low pitch instrumental being played fits the whole vibe which gives suspense to the scene. Another thing is the camera angle that they use, mostly in the opening / start of the movie they have mostly medium and close up shots, to which this emphasizes the characters expression but not only that with the combination of the music this gives a more in depth feeling as there was one scene where the camera angle was tilted making it become a dutch angle while there was a high pitch ringing sound. In my opinion this is very cool and I would like to implement this in my opening.
What I wouldn't want to use is how they added blood into the scene that were very realistic, in my opinion this would be good for our theme but getting those realistic type of blood / substance that represent blood might be hard and it may not result to what is expected. Another thing is that how they added the music that were loud that I did not enjoy so well, it does conform the genre but it is not the idea / theme that i'm going for with my project.
Here are some videos that help me and give ideas for the movie opening
In this video it shows some ways on how to open a movie. In my opinion this helps me a lot because they show different kinds of ways movies do it and they also explain why they are open this way.
Personal Reflection: This research help me to understand about the genre more, as I rarely and would rather not watch thriller genre. It gives me more ideas on what I would want to do for the project, other than that it tells me how most of the movie opening contains the same idea which is building suspense to whats about to happen. I enjoy doing this research on the genre as it allows me to watch more into the thriller genre of movies.
In this blog it contains my research on different types of genre before picking the genre for our project
Before we start to work on our project we did some research on different types of genre that we could do for our project. We also watch a youtube video about film opening and how we could open our film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jw_ysaoVlt4
Film
Genre/Genre Conventions
How did this scene introduce characters, settings and create intrigue?
What did you like/dislike about the intro?
Extraction II, 2023
Action
Fight, explosion, hero, villain, weapon, blood,
In this film it uses the theory of starting the intro by adding a loud bang, where in the scene it shows the character getting shot in the next then everything went black, but the scene came up again emphasising with the characters emotion. It kept doing this until the character was on the edge of the bridge leaning on the bridge then fell into the ocean. In my opinion with this it gives the audience a sense of curiosity, because the audience wants to know what will happen with the character but with the black screen keeps coming up this makes the scene more intense.
Other than that they also introduce the intro by introducing the hero as they first show the main character by emphasising the
For me what I dislike about the movie is how there was a lot of things going on, where there were so much blood and gun shot. This was good for the movie, but for my own personal preference it’s not what I would want to watch in a movie.
Pamali: The corpse Village, 2023
Horror
Ghost, jumpscare, dark/low light, old places, night time, murder, blood,
In this film it uses the theory by starting the film with a huge bang, where this allows to create an intrigue making the audience curious.
Another thing is that the film introduces the film by showing the genre by showing genre conventions such as the dark lighting, how it was in a cemetery, the character was alone, and how the scene was at night.
Overall they didn’t have any dialog in which this makes the audience feel more intense because they don’t know what’s going to happen next.
I dislike how from the intro of the video for me it was confusing which makes it hard to decode what is happening in the film. Other than that it was mostly just the character in the film doing their own thing then suddenly they started whistling, for me this is what i disliked from it.
Uglies, 2024
Sci Fi
Technology, space, magic, aliens, flying cars,
In this film it uses the theory of introducing the audience with the genre where they show the scenes of scientists being present and all of the technologies that they use during the film.
Not only that they also introduce the audience the plot of the film by the narrator which is also the main character, they introduce it by doing a flashback of what has happened giving context to the audience on what to expect and why things are being shown in the film.
What I really enjoy is when the narrator did a flashback on what has happened and in my opinion this helps to make the audience more interested and engage with the movie.
(500) Days of Summer, 2000
Romance
People in love, bf, gf, weddings, dates, bright colours, people happy,
In this film it uses the theory by introducing the relationship between the characters which is the man and women. It also introduces the genre, but how the narrator in the movie says that the movie wasn’t about love.
With the narrator saying that the movie wasn’t about love, this helps to create intrigue as from the first scenes they show both of the characters it looks like they were in love but with the narrator saying they weren’t it creates a sense of curiosity for the audience making them want to watch the whole movie.
Overall they show the plot of the movie by showing where the characters first know each other, which is in the office. This allows the audience to guess what would happen throughout the movie, but still it is not sure yet whether that will happen or not.
I believe that the montage was good but it was a bit too long and it felt like just a repetition for me. The choice of music that they use in order to show the montage of the video it is good just a bit too long
Johnny English, 2003
Comedy
Jokes, character teasing each other,
In this film firstly they use the theory of introducing the hero of the movie and as well the main character which was Johnny English, the setting of the film was dark at first which in my opinion this allows the audience to feel intense with what's going to happen next, BUT they change scene and it shows to the audience how it was all just a daydream that the character had.
At the very last scene the characters were having a conversation in which they had a short pause then they introduced the character Johnny English as their ‘new agent’ in which they added a montage. During the montage it was very interesting as they show the red blue and white colours trying to represent the english flag and as well they show some clips of Johnny English being silly in each clips where audience
From this movie I like everything about the film, nothing was boring in my opinion. What I really liked was the montage of the film.
From all of these research my group decided to focus on thriller, as from the first 5 genre that I have research does not have thriller I research about one movie in the thriller genre.
Breaking In, 2018
Thriller
Low-key lighting, plot twist,
In this film they introduce a character which was an old man who at first was shown at a slow pace, feeling like it was a montage video of him. During this scene the lighting colour was in a dark contrast that gives off a gloomy feeling. Then music suddenly came out, the music was upbeat but the singer singing it was in a low tone. During this music being played it was the old man jogging. With the music being upbeat as well it shows the setting being in the neighbourhood which was bright. But soon not long after there was a sudden car that appeared and hit the old man. When the driver came out, it made me think how
From this movie I like how they build suspense at the beginning making it feel mysterious but they change it by adding upbeat music. I also like the idea of having the montage video of the old man jogging, there was a scene that shows how careful the old man was when he was crossing the road where out of nowhere a car came and hit him.
Self reflection: This preliminary research help me a lot on learning more and see what each genre has to offer, with us watching the first opening of the movie it gives me an idea on what I could do for each movie opening. From this preliminary research as well made me realised that most movies in the same genre has almost similar idea of their opening movie, to which this allows me to dive deeper for the thriller genre and see what kind of conventions and ideas that they use in the movie.
